Flying squirrel - caped marauder!

Despite being seldom seen due to their nocturnal habits, flying squirrels are indeed common. Caped flying squirrels, however, are pretty uncommon.

Grandfather and squirrel

"My grandfather had a pet squirrel at one time. He lived in Chislehurst, in a house with woods in a large back garden. The squirrels would come and knock on the window to be fed and eventually one became so tame that it would come indoors. It used to sit on my grandfather's head and eat nuts. It chewed holes in the top of some of the doors so it could get round the house more easily. It also chewed the top of the pen my grandfather kept in his pocket."

Squirrel trashes home leaving £7,000 repair bill

Homeowner feared she had been burgled and ran downstairs to find the squirrel trapped in the front room 

"Margaret Bousfield, 64, came downstairs in the morning to find the angry rodent had ransacked her living room. The squirrel had fallen down her chimney and clawed, bitten and soiled her curtains, furniture, sofa and carpets. It had even made a desperate attempt to get out - by scratching through the plastic double-glazing window frames. Margaret, a magistrate, was asleep at the time but was eventually woken up when the squirrel triggered the burglar alarm. She feared she had been burgled and ran downstairs to find the squirrel trapped in the front room. The mum-of-two called in a neighbour who tried to corner the animal and opened a window to let it escape..." 

Gimme some of that old Moonstomping

This Kensington Gardens squirrel was yesterday observed to display a curious footstamping dance prior to approaching London Squirrels researchers. The reasons for this unexpected manouevre is yet to be established - was it a squirrine form of skinhead reggae Moonstomp, in honour of the Notting Hill carnival taking place up the road? A display of impatience?








In any case, having taking possession of a monkey nut, the nimble-footed female retreated to a safe distance (below) in order to better enjoy her booty, and,  indeed, to shake her booty.

"A kind-hearted soldier rescued a baby squirrel on the verge of death and then nursed him back to health by feeding him every four hours.
Warrant officer Pyotr Pankratau was serving in the Belarussian army when he discovered the tiny baby squirrel under a tree...

 

Incredibly, the baby squirrel made a full recovery and stayed with Pankratau throughout his two years of service in the army.

Pankratau named the squirrel Minsk - after the Belarus capital - and he now never leaves his side.

Minsk even accompanies Pankratau, now a taxi driver, as he drives passengers around the city."

Just what Hackney needs - another artist

‘NUT PILE’ (2011) 
is a static yet pop-up installation that explores the use of public space by non-human Hackney residents. Adopting a Deleuzian becoming-animal approach, this intriguing new piece by local resident 'H.S.' challenges crow hegemonies and interrogates possibilities of alterity. The pile of nuts is a static physical presence, yet when cached (buried) its (dis)appearance renders it a ghostly (non) presence, but one which is always-already present in the memory of the squirrel, until such time as the nut may be re-presented.   

'Nut pile' occupies approximately 6" x 8" and can be installed at your gallery space easily and quickly.
